Nai Roshni - Self-reliance and empowering women

Our partner Wayanad Social Service Society is active on so many fronts. Adya is honoured to share their projects and activities with the public in Europe.

Within the key objectives of Wayanad SSS as a regional NGO we notice amongst others the ambition 'to promote sustainable livelihoods of the marginalised, especially Tribals'.

Within this general goal we've come to experience in 2015 the actual activity related to it. 'Nai Roshni' it is called. Wayanad SSS developed a scheme for the leadership development of minority women, as implemented by the Indian Ministry of Minority Affairs.

This particular scheme is set up to empower and develop confidence among minority women, including their neighbours from other communities living in the same village, by providing knowledge, tools and techniques for interacting with Government systems, banks and other institutions at all levels.

For this activity, Wayanad SSS acts as the Program Facilitating Agency in Kerala State. It is done within a structure in the state itself, which avoids to have it isolated or depending on external or temporary support. It is done by themselves, based on self-reliance!

Adya has visited some farmers, some of them from minority people. The short time spending with them (with translation) on their terraced property in between spices, fruit trees gave us the idea that the structure is there for these people to rely on, they can prosper on their own but within the community sharing all useful common knowledge and tools.
